Coaching and Mentor-ship ( Naija Style) I went to my favorite grocery shop some days ago, to pick up a few items with my N1K budget, I walked into a double visit of a company, trust me, I was amused and I began to observe. This was the picture: 3 guys Guy A: Youngest Rookie, learning the ropes. Guy B: Eldest, Seasoned Sales pro, weathered the storms, but has stayed too long in his company, his career is stunted. Guy C: Middle aged, looked recently married, beginning to have a pot belly, and you could see the air of arrogance that he was the team lead. Guy C says "our brand could be placed on a better shelf, is this the best spot?, where could this be placed that we will have the best visibility?" Guy B goes sharp sharp "Oga has said it, what do you think?" Guy A ( poor boy) just could smile apologetically. I was reading through my past articles, and this made me laugh. I used my daughters as an analogy in achieving Sales Targets, while reading through, I realized that Sales and Marketing was never meant to be complicated, we have read so many books, latching on to trends and strategy. Remember 1. It is alright to achieve Sales/Revenue in a simple way: You do not have to do acrobatic stunts to make the Customer like you, they like everybody. 2. Sales and Marketing is fun: Never take out the Fun element. 3. Understand your Team/Customers: We all play different roles. 4. Nobody will take your Job: Train your Team and treat them well. 5. Be Realistic in Expectation sharing the Vision: Everybody needs a clear Insight of the destination, it is not " just sell" Say "Our Goal is to achieve XYZ in Revenue in 6 Months, ensuring we have a 10% Market Share in Nigeria" This gives a clear picture across the Company. J.D Rockefeller said “give me workers and not thinkers” Why? Thinkers are complicated. Thinkers challenge the norm. Improved thought process is powerful; the most aligned team needs a thinker in their midst to enable the Team to see a clear picture devoid of clutter. The Team needs strategy, needs someone in the inside to drive the strategy, power tussle in teams is as natural as sibling rivalry. Obviously there is space for everyone. In Teams there is a strong dominant leader, not necessary the brightest nor strongest, the strongest skill required is the ability to adapt to the team situations at a particular time. Does Sales Certification answer all questions? Follow your gut while hiring your sales team.

What could be wrong? I have seen that Certification in Sales does not always add up. Sales Certification is not always the Way forward.  My Personal opinion is: "A Smart sales Pro can read the Market like a travelling caravan, uses the sun and the soil to navigate the route, understanding the elements and the seasons to predict trends. The Market evolves in times and seasons as the people evolve in consumer behaviors. The Sales pro studies the nature of the Target audience and predicts the likely outcome of the behavioral model, with data and logical thinking. simply explained: I have 2 daughters, 16 and 12, we are in different demographics, I want them to buy a product of mine, a corn snack, telling them it is a maize snack, they will never touch it with a long pole.
